ADULT EDUCATION

United’s Educational Opportunities for Adults

Adult Retreat

During the fall each year a spiritual retreat is offered to the adults of our congregation. This retreat is an opportunity for members to "get away from it all" and, for a modest fee, participate in Bible study, meditation, prayer, reflection, quiet, meaningful discussions by the fire, fellowship, friendship, and fun. The retreat is offered on a first-come, first-served basis, so please plan accordingly.

Educational Trips and Tours

In the spring of 1997, we began offering travel opportunities to the people of United as part of our education program. The goal was to provide United's people with the ultimate learning experience: to travel to the places that touch our Christian hearts, and learn from these places by actually experiencing them. In the winter of 1998 our first trip took us to Israel and Egypt. We experienced everything from early morning worship on a fishing boat on the Sea of Galilee, to an afternoon at the base of Mt. Sinai. In 2000 our adult pilgrimage took us to the Passion Play in Oberammergau, Germany. Our trip included an extension into Switzerland, highlighted by a wonderful program at the World Council of Churches. The past two years offered educational opportunities came in the form of trips to England and Scotland as well as Nova Scotia. There are so many possibilities and places to explore in this world that can enrich our faith, The Journeys of Paul, the Cathedrals of Europe, our Wesleyan Heritage, and the list goes on and on. Travel opportunities will be offered to our congregation at least once a year, and are not limited to members only.

This year our journeys will take us to Greece. We will leave in November, 2006. Please watch the "Good News" and this website for a journal of our adventures.  United's travelers are invited -- and encouraged -- to bring their friends to this ultimate classroom: the world.  Start thinking about Italy in 2008 and a return to Oberammergau in 2010, and join us!

Second Hours

Periodically, mini-studies and presentations are held in the Manchester Room following worship on Sunday mornings. These sessions will be known as "Second Hour" begin after fellowship in Farnum Hall and lasting for about an hour. "Second Hour" meetings cover a wide variety of subjects (the minister’s morning sermon, a parishioner’s recent trip abroad, or even health care) and are announced in the Good News and in the worship bulletin.

FAMILY “Sunday School”

Throughout the year this year we will have special offerings for entire families.  Some of the topics will include alternatives to the fast food trap, family health, dealing with death, etc.  Class dates and topics will be announced through the Good News, Joys and Concerns, and the church calendar.
